A Unique Initiative under 'Samporko' Programme in Unakoti District

By Representative Anupam Pal, Kailashahar

July 15, 2025, will be remembered as a landmark day in the administrative history of Unakoti district in Tripura. On this day, District Magistrate Dr. Tamal Majumdar (IAS) launched a compassionate and innovative initiative called ‘Samporko’, centered around the deeply meaningful slogan—“Gaon Ko Apnao, Badlav Lao” (Embrace the Village, Bring Change).

Under this initiative, officials from various departments have voluntarily “adopted” all 92 Gram Panchayats and ADC villages across the district. The core idea is to go beyond official duties and personally engage with the adopted villages—listening to people’s everyday problems and building direct human connections.

Dr. Tamal Majumdar himself set an inspiring example by adopting Gournagar Gram Panchayat. During a visit to the village on July 15, he noticed an alarming situation at a local Anganwadi Centre (AWC): a mentally ill man had been lying on the verandah floor for hours, which was scaring the children and affecting attendance.

Upon inquiring, the District Magistrate learned that the man's name is Sushanta Sinha, a resident of Kirtantali village under the Gournagar RD Block. He had been suffering from mental health issues for quite some time. Taking swift action, Dr. Majumdar informed the Chief Medical Officer (CMO) of Unakoti.

Recognizing the urgency, District Medical Officer Dr. Shankha Subhra Debnath stepped in. With consent from Sushanta’s mother, Bijuli Sinha, arrangements were quickly made to transfer him to a mental health facility in Agartala for better care. Supported by local administration, the health department, and the police, Sushanta was safely moved the very next morning to the Ushabazar Mental Hospital in Narsingarh, Agartala, by ambulance.

Speaking on the incident, Dr. Tamal Majumdar said,

"We want no one to feel excluded from society or neglected. We wish for this individual’s speedy recovery, and as an administration, we stand by him."

His humane intervention not only ensured that a vulnerable person received the help he desperately needed but also served as a powerful message—when governance becomes truly people-centric, meaningful change follows.

Social media has since been flooded with praise for the initiative. Many have commented:

“If officials at all levels show such empathy, many of society’s problems will solve themselves.”
